Nani, however, qualified his prediction, stating that if United falls short this season, they could succeed next year.
Former Portuguese international, Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha, popularly known as Nani, has backed his former club, Manchester United, to win the English Premier League (EPL) trophy this season.
He made this known during a recent interview with Canadian online platform, Covers.com.
According to Nani, there is no reason why his former side cannot fight for the title this season under Erik ten Hag.
Although Man United found themselves near the bottom of the league table after starting the season poorly, the Red Devils have since turned things around.
They are now sixth in the table going into this weekend’s fixtures after ten Hag achieved his first three consecutive league wins since the start of the season against Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton.
That run of form has United up to sixth in the table, just one point off the top four, six points away from league leaders, Arsenal, and a point ahead of defending champions and arch-rivals Manchester City.
When asked if Manchester United could be surprise contenders, Nani replied, “Why not?”
The 38-year-old added, “They [Man United] are building a strong team and are trying to get back into real competition with the teams that are always at the top of the table: Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Man City. So, they are there now. They have the possibility.
“If they win the next few games, everything can change. So, we never know. Let’s keep on winning games and then we’ll see.
“If it’s not this year, maybe they will get the confidence for next season. So, let’s see.
“Not being in Europe helps on one side…
“I’ve been watching the team and I’m really happy.”
Arsenal are regarded as the heavy favourites to win their first league title since 2004.
Mikel Arteta’s men have won seven of their first nine matches, drawing one, and losing only one.
They have also been solid defensively, conceding just three goals in fourteen games in all competitions.
