JAMB Advisory: Updated Procedure for Degree Admission in Affiliated Institutions
Reference: JAMB Weekly Bulletin, November 10th, 2025
In 2022, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) proposed that universities should take full responsibility for admissions into all degree programmes offered through their affiliated institutions. However, this directive was not fully implemented at the time, as universities were initially allowed to decide how to manage the process. To date, only the University of Ibadan has fully assumed the role of overseeing and coordinating admissions for its affiliates.
Following a meeting held on Monday, 18th August 2025, involving various institutions and JAMB officials regarding violations of matriculation guidelines, concerns were raised about the current admission processing structure. Institutions highlighted that under the existing system, they could not be held accountable for the actions or misconduct of their affiliate institutions.
As a result, it was resolved that the previously proposed process—where Mother-Institutions take responsibility for admissions into their affiliated institutions—should now be implemented by all universities with affiliates.
To ensure clarity and uniformity, the Board has developed an updated procedure for processing admissions by both Mother-Institutions and their affiliates, as follows:
- Step 1: Mother-Institutions are to oversee all aspects of the admission process for their affiliated institutions, including the verification of candidate eligibility and compliance with admission guidelines.
- Step 2: Affiliate institutions must submit complete candidate data to their Mother-Institution for review and approval before any admission is finalized.
- Step 3: Mother-Institutions will coordinate with JAMB to ensure all admissions are properly documented and in line with the Board’s regulations.
- Step 4: Any discrepancies or violations identified during the process will be addressed by the Mother-Institution, making them accountable for ensuring compliance at all affiliate levels.
- Step 5: JAMB will continue to monitor the implementation of this procedure to ensure consistency and transparency across all institutions.
This updated advisory ensures that the admission process for degree programmes across affiliated institutions is transparent, accountable, and standardized, benefiting both universities and prospective students.
